Sony refreshes its premium Walkmans with a $5,899 flagship

The NW-WM1ZM3, NW-WM1AM3 and NW-ZX900 update Sony's dedicated high-resolution players, with new amplification and DSD processing.

Sony has announced three premium Walkman digital audio players: the Signature Series NW-WM1ZM3 and NW-WM1AM3, alongside the NW-ZX900. The October 15 announcement lists all three for preorder.

The flagship NW-WM1ZM3 uses a gold-plated, oxygen-free copper chassis, upgraded power circuitry and internal Kimber Kable wiring. Sony attributes reduced electrical noise and improved audio performance to these design choices; those are manufacturer claims, not findings from a HiFi Herald listening test.

The players feature updated S-Master HX digital amplification, native DSD support and a DSD Remastering Engine that converts PCM audio into an 11.2 MHz DSD stream. U.S. pricing is approximately $1,900 for the NW-ZX900, $3,000 for the NW-WM1AM3 and $5,899 for the NW-WM1ZM3. The range continues Sony's investment in dedicated players alongside smartphone listening.
